Juliet: I have looking into this for awhile, and get so many conflicting answers that I still can't say which is best. Magnesium citrate is the most common, though.
Each of them has very different concentrations of magnesium as well - magnesium oxide by far having the most. You'd think that would end the story, but it doesn't. The amount of magnesium in each has to be weighed against the bioavailability of each - in other words, some forms of magnesium are better absorbed by the body. In that regard, magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed while magnesium citrate is well absorbed.

That brings us back to square one!

So, I'll just refer to the University of Maryland, which suggests magnesium citrate, magnesium gluconate, and magnesium lactate (and possibly magnesium sulfate - though that is better used for bath salts). They chose these three based mainly because they are the most easily absorbed.

Chelated magnesium is recommended as well by many, but I can't recommend a dependable brand.

So far as doses, anywhere from 350 - 500mg per day, though some experts even suggest 700mg per day. One thing for sure, if you find your stool is getting very runny, cut back or adjust your dose.

Don't take your daily dose all at one, break it up into 4 daily doses - or at least one dose in the morning and one before bed.

If you have kidney problems, see your doctor before taking any supplements.
Overdosing on magnesium can make things worse. This is one reason why I push the food sources.

The other reason is that magnesium from food just often works where the supplements may not.

Good luck!

Thanks, Rosy. I am looking into transdermal magnesium supplements. My main concern is the possibility of overdosing. The other one is that, outside of Japan, not many people take baths (many transdermal supplements are bath salts).

I'll look into Better You" for a future post.

Try using 'BetterYou' magnesium oil spray. It is absorbed through the skin so doesn't need to be digested.

I know I have a Magnesium deficiency due to the horrible migraines I have on a regular basis. I also have Crohn's disease. My problem has been fidning a Magnesium supplement that doesn't hurt my bowels.
